Getting the right intercom system for your electric gates

When you have your electric gates installed, the chances are that you’re going to want an intercom system to go with them. Having an intercom system simply means you are able to effortlessly communicate with the person or people at your gates and will allow you to make a determination over whether or not to let them in. At TPS, we don’t subscribe to the theory that one intercom system fits all, that’s why we offer a selection of two different systems so you can pick the one that best suits your needs. The type of intercom system you want could depend on a number of aspects, from your budget to the amount of time you spend at home and more. So to help you come to a decision regarding your intercom system, we’ve laid out some of the thinking points you should consider when it comes to an intercom for your electric gates.

How often do you spend at home?

If you’re considering electric gates to add security to a holiday home, then a GSM intercom system could be the choice for you. In fact, if you work away a lot or you’re planning on having a lot of work done to your property whilst you live off site, then a GSM intercom system will mean that you can be away from your home while still controlling who comes into the grounds of your property. If, for example, you have a holiday home that you regularly rent out, then a GSM intercom will work for you by utilising cell phone technology. The system works by using both the technology and a network service provider such as EE or O2. If someone arrives at your gates, they simply press the call button located on the intercom and the system can be programmed to call your mobile phone. So as long as you have signal, you can operate your gates from pretty much anywhere in the world, which is ideal if you’re regularly away from the property.

Would you rather not have additional equipment in your house?

Although a lot of people aren’t too worried about having the additional equipment that comes with some intercom systems in their house, others don’t want any more cabling within their home, which once again means that a GSM intercom would be the choice for them. If you’re someone who is regularly home but still wants the convenience of using their mobile phone to control the gates, then a GSM system will allow you to do just that. As we previously mentioned, GSM is a great choice if you’re regularly away from the property, but it can be a convenient choice if you’re at home too. A GSM intercom system for your electric gates will also work if you live in an area which suffers from poor mobile phone reception because the system can simply be programmed to call your landline instead.

Would you rather have equipment dedicated to your electric gates?

In today’s world, we seem to get calls all of the time, whether it’s calls from family and friends or it’s somebody trying to sell you something, so it’s understandable if you would rather have an intercom system in place that doesn’t call you whilst you’re busy at home or work. Having a wireless radio or dect intercom system means that if somebody is at your gates, you will know about it via a stand-alone intercom handset, which will be located in your house. If, for example, you’re expecting a call from a family member and it turns out to be somebody at your gate, this will avoid any confusion while freeing up your mobile phone or landline. Wireless radio or dect systems are range based and the range will be dependent on the installation site itself. If there is a clear line of sight without any interference, then it’s entirely possible that the system can achieve a range of 80 metres, which is more than enough for most houses.
